FAQ about Tulip – Red

What kind of soil do tulips prefer?
Tulips grow best in loose, well-drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Heavy clay that stays wet causes the bulbs to rot, so work in grit or compost if your soil is heavy. Plant the bulbs in autumn at about three times their own height.
Do tulips need deadheading after flowering?
Snap off the faded flower heads as soon as the petals drop so the bulb does not waste energy on making seed. Leave the foliage until it turns yellow and withers by itself, which takes about six weeks, as it feeds the bulb for next year's flowers.
Why do tulips keep growing in the vase?
Tulips really do carry on growing after they are cut. The stems can stretch several centimetres in the first few days and bend towards the light. Use a tall vase with just a few centimetres of cool water and turn it now and then to keep the stems straighter.
How can I make cut tulips last longer?
Keep them cool, away from radiators and direct sun, and top up with cold water every day. Recut the stems straight across and remove any wilted leaves. Avoid putting freshly cut daffodils in the same vase, as their sap shortens the vase life of tulips.
Can tulip bulbs stay in the ground over winter?
Yes, tulips are hardy and need a cold spell in winter to flower. Leave the bulbs in well-drained soil and mark the spot so you do not dig into them. In very wet ground it is better to lift the bulbs once the foliage has died down and replant them in autumn.
